THUNDER

UPDATE: Thunder is beginning the month of November in his new home with his new family! They have promised to let him sleep on the bed, cuddle on the couch and to make him popcorn!

Thunder (born Feb 2006) was originally in our program over a year ago when we rescued his mother (purebred German Shepherd) and her newborn litter from a shelter in Abilene. He was adopted out at three months and returned 8 month later, because he is "too shy". We are not sure of his "heritage" - as newborns pups we thought they might be boxers, then they kept getting bigger and some of the pups developed ridges - so we went with ridgeback. Now Thunder has the long legs of a Great Dane. Anyway - he's big and very handsome with a wonderful short coat.

We'll never know the whole story since the family did not return him themselves - they sent someone else to bring him back. While Thunder was a bit traumatized about his change in circumstances and overwhelmed by the number of dogs that greeted him at his foster home - within 24 hours he was playing and running with all the dogs. He especially liked playing with the females his age. Thunder is very affectionate and thinks he is a lap dog. He loves to curl up beside you on the couch and sleeps on the bed resting his head on his foster mom.

This big boy is pretty sensitive and does not like raised voices and now has an aversion to men. He responds well to positive reinforcement and affection and is quite intelligent. Thunder has a great big voice, which he will use when strangers approach. He can also be a little bossy with the younger pups. He loves his toys and playing ball.

The ideal situation for him would probably be with single woman or a single mom with older kids. Since he is such a big boy - over 80 lbs at one year - he would be too much dog for toddlers as he can be quite enthusiastic when greeting you or playing with his toys. We have found him to be a little bossy with the younger dogs, so a home with small dogs might not be a good idea - as Thunder is protective of his food. A dog he could run and wrestle with would be ideal and help rebuild his confidence.

Thunder is current on all his vaccinations, neutered, on heartworm prevention, housebroken, walks well on a leash and rides well in a car.

News

Large numbers of loving animals are ending up on "death row" in metroplex shelters every day. PLEASE consider adopting TODAY and SAVE A LIFE!

Who We Are

We are a volunteer group operating in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. All of our dogs are in foster homes (private homes of volunteers). We do NOT have a shelter.
One of the advantages of having our rescued GSDs in private homes is that we know how they react inside our foster homes, not how they "might" react in a home setting (as is an issue with dogs that have been "warehoused" in a shelter or at large kennels).

Our volunteers give freely of their time, money, and affection to save these animals. Please keep in mind that they are ALL volunteers - no one gets paid, and we all have full-time jobs, families, and lives too. Please be patient if we cannot answer you immediately - we do strive to respond within 24-48 hours to all inquiries.

German Shepherds (GSDs) are loving and loyal companions, who provide comfort and security to those privileged enough to share their friendship and love.

All of our rescued GSDs are spayed or neutered, are current on vaccinations, and are tested for heartworms, lyme disease, and ehrlichia. Dogs who test positive for any of these or are ill / injured, are treated. All of our animals are on heartworm preventative.

Adopting a friend

Please contact us at the email address provided. Everyone involved with this group is a volunteer. To insure their privacy, we do not give out their home telephone numbers.

ALL prospective adopters MUST complete our pre-adoption application (below). It is a short form that asks some basic questions to help us find the best possible match for each GSD and each home.

There are adoption fees associated with every GSD. Adoption fees vary and are dependent on the cost of the medical care provided to each GSD. Fees usually range from $150 - $300 per dog, with the typical adoption fee being $200.

Email Us!

As we are a volunteer group, we do NOT have a shelter. ALL of our dogs are fostered in private homes - some homes have a lot of dogs, some have only one foster dog. For the privacy of our volunteers, we do not give out their home addresses.
APPROVED adopters will be contacted and arrangements will be made to have them meet our rescued GSDs.
